Obama Makes History
JacksonBlazer writes, "By George Brown Jackson Blazer staff writer June 9 - Illinois Senator Barack Obama secured the Democratic presidential nomination on June 4 after 16 months of tense competition, primarily with New York Senator and former first lady Hillary Clinton. The barrier breaking primary contest had shown an ability to inspire millions of voters, most seeking change in the way Washington responds to voter concerns. Obama is the first African American to prevail as a viable candidate for the nation’s top job while Clinton shaped up as the first female candidate to seriously contend to lead the country. "
The Democratic nomination process set records for the number of voters participating, the amount of money raised by each candidate and the length of the contest. But ultimately it was the so-called super delegates, the highest ranking officials in party politics and rank and file local officials that pushed Obama over the 2,118 vote threshold needed for nomination at the Democratic convention set for Denver, Colorado in August. Now the historic campaign enters a new phase as Obama faces off against Republican nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona for the presidency. The youth vote was vital to Obama’s primary win so the Blazer News asked area youth how they viewed his chances of becoming president of the United States. Patrick Rogers “Obama has a good chance to win the election. He’s made it this far and has a lot of support around the country.” Antonio Scott :“I believe he can win. An Obama victory would make everything better and really help the black community.” Keonta Howell “He has a very good chance of winning the election. Obama has a lot of support and he’s a different kind of politician. People want to see change.”
