Dr. King’s Message Included Whites
writes, "The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. worked for equality for all races, including whites, which is something syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. says everyone should remember when honoring the civil-rights leader’s life. In his last days, King was planning the Poor People’s Campaign, a multiethnic march on Washington, D.C., which would have addressed poverty issues across racial lines and demanded action.

Dr . Martin L uther King, Jr
writes, "Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. His father was the minister of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, as was his father before him .M.L.,. as he was called, lived with his parents, his sister and brother in Atlanta Ga. Their home was not far from the church his father preached at M.L’s mother and father taught their children what would become an important part of M.L’s life - to treat all people with respect. Martin’s father worked hard to break down the barriers between the races. His father believed African-Americans should register their complaints by voting As M.L. grew up he found that not everyone followed his parents principles.

He noticed that .black. people and white people where treated differently. He saw that he and his white friends could not drink from the same water fountains and could not use the same restrooms ML’s best friend as a child was a white boy and as children they played happily together. But when they reached school age the friends found that even though they lived in the same neighborhood, they could not go to the same school. M.L’s friend would go to a school for white children only and M.L. was sent to a school for .black. children. After the first day of school M.L. and his friend were never allowed to play together again

Diversity
writes, "How much do you really care about moving America in a positive direction? Not only in the political arena but our social structure as well. Racism, sexism and bigotry all together run ramped from every state capital to Washington D.C. Allow me to propose this to you, by continuing prop-up pre civil era men into positions of polictical power will only continue to bring America token gestures of diversity."

A Long Overdue Honor for the Tuskegee Airmen
writes, "Michigan Senator Carl Levin Sponsors Legislation To Award Medals

The Tuskegee Airmen were recently honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in a moving ceremony in the U.S. Capitol. More than 350 Airmen from across the country, including many from Michigan, were in Washington to receive Congress’ highest honor for their heroism in fighting for our country abroad during World War II while challenging bigotry and racism here at home. It was a day of heartfelt joy and gratitude that was long overdue. It was my honor to have sponsored the legislation that awarded the Airmen the medal, along with Congressman Charlie Rangel of New York.

Obama Wouldn’t Be First Black President
writes, "You’ve seen the headlines: “Are Americans Ready for a Black President?” “Is Obama Black Enough?” “Obama: America’s First Black President?” Ever since the nation first met Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in 2004, his race has been called into question more times than Michael Jackson’s. Obama is clearly a black man, but is this really a breakthrough? Some blacks say Obama isn’t “black enough,” which seems ironic because for many blacks, former President Bill Clinton was “black enough.” In 2001, Clinton was honored as the nation’s “first black president” at the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. MRS. BRENDA GIBSON
writes, "Wife of Pastor Bennie Gibson of New Macedonia Baptist Church Throughout 2006, The Jackson Blazer profiled 10 of the city’s pastors. Over the next few months, we will now shift the focus to pastor’s wives. Question: Where were you born and raised? Answer: “I was born and raised right here in Jackson, Michigan.” Question: Did you grow up in the church? Answer: “I did not grow up in the church per se; however I did attend sporadically throughout my formative years. My grandfather, James Artis, Sr. was a Deacon at Second Baptist Church until his death in April of 1992; which is where I generally attended services.” Question: How did you come to accept Christ? Answer: “I visited Lily Baptist Church and heard Pastor James Hines preach the Word with such conviction and power. It was then that I realized how meaningless and incomplete my life was without Jesus Christ, as a result in January of 1992, I accepted Christ as my personal savior and I have not looked back since that time.” Question: Family & Education. Answer: “I am married to Reverend Bennie Gibson who is the pastor of New Macedonia Baptist Church and we have one child, Brittany who is 14 years-old and in the tenth grade. I attended Michigan State University and earned an MSW degree in Clinical Social Work. I am currently attending Spring Arbor University and will graduate on 5/12/07, with a MA in School Counseling.” Question: When you were growing up, did you ever aspire to become a pastor’s wife? Has this calling taken you by surprise in any way? Answer: “No, I never dreamed of becoming a pastor’s wife but I have since learned that God will call whomever He chooses to carry out His plan. I also consider it to be a blessing to have been chosen.”"
